When I was at work yesterday, a girl came in saying she was ready to pick up a frame order and it was of a giant cat. I instantly thought "Oh gawd," when I went looking for it. Then when I grabbed this I got so so excited! I told her all about Matt, Capitol G and she probably thought I was crazy. She said she bought it at the USU Print Sale and is moving to New York so she's planning on shipping this to her new home. The actual frame sort of amazingly matches the printed frame.

So it took me a solid 10 minutes to try to remember what e-mail and password I use for this thing so Sheila and I can graciously offer my kitchen for the 3rd Annual Christmas Breakfast thing I have never attended before. I have 4 barstools, a wooden stool, a regular sized couch/futon, an office chair and Ryan Gregson can just stand.

Please comment below what day and time works best for everyone. I know Mackay doesn't fly in until December 22nd.

Have you heard of Path? I've been hearing a lot more about it in the past couple days and I must say it sounds pretty intriguing. It's a kind of like facebook and twitter but with a couple key differences. A social network the limits you to 50 friends? I've been pretty conservative in who I friend-request/accept and I've still got 207 friends. Who would be in your 50 friends? I also love the aspect of sharing through photos and I thought that would be appeal to the rest of the family as well. It's an amateur Circus night in the back of a brewery. It's the greatest thing I've seen so far. I'm really sad that I didn't record the kid that put a (rope/long rubber-band) through his nose, and out his mouth and ran back and forth while two people held the ends. I was too busy vomiting. I think maybe our next get together could be circus themed...Come see the man boy lesbian (Matt) It would be the best.

Hello Family,
I found this really great thing yesterday on the interweb and I thought all of you would be as excited as I am... because let's face it, we're all nerds. Ch-ch-check it out.

So, first off, we have the sketchbook project.
It consists of you picking a theme and then they send you a little moleskine notebook and you draw in it for a while and send it back. It goes on tour like a band and then it will be in the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Art Library and people can check them out and look at them whenever they want. Neat right?

Next, we have ourselves a giant print exchange.

You make 17 11"x15" prints, send them in along with $19, you get 15 back, one goes into the permanent collection again and then the last one goes up in a show where all of the prints are on sale for $100. You sell yours? You get $70. Good good deal. You can't do anything digital but I think you can still do photos if you want. Like cyanotypes or something. Way better than digital anyway.

They have a bunch of other things too but these are the best, I think. Look at the website. Do it.

I think G might be the grandchild of the family or something like that.

Remember that time that we were having breakfast and talking about what people from Utah name their children and MacKay pulled out a couple names, almost too easily? I heard about this site the other day that collects Utah names. It even has them broken down into boys and girls for your convenience.

The following is taken from a paragraph from the link that says: "What's in a (Utah) name?"

So one night recently I woke up at five in the morning and I had the most genius idea. We still haven't done a family show. I don't know if all of you have seen the amazing movie that Darci has been working on since dec? But once you've seen it you will be AMAZED. I can't get images out of my head. It is honestly, one of the best movies ever.

The Genius Idea... We have our family show with a viewing of Darce's Amazing video at the Logan Art Cinema. I have already contacted people about getting in and fixing the place up and what not. It's a possibility. We will do this! I will make this happen and you will all suffer with me. So start planning on what you are going to exhibit. Also, if you are not interested...we'll replace you with pink pants. It's happened once it can happen again.

The 100 Show

THIS FRIDAY is the deadline to submit graphic design pieces into the Salt Lake City AIGA's The 100 Show which is the most prestigious juried competition that honors and showcases the year's best design, advertising and digital media.

And just because not all of us have studied graphic design doesn't mean you can't enter. In fact, I just entered these two which are both from letterpress:

And if you're really wanting to get your name out there, without submitting, AIGA is having a silent auction during the Awards Ceremony to help them raise money to continue expanding the possibilities of Graphic Arts locally. Let me know if you're interested. I think this is a great opportunity for our artwork to be seen.

I am once again volunteering at the Sundance Film Festival. Thought I'd share some important dates and websites if any are interested in attending.

Here is the schedule for the Broadway Theater (where I'm volunteering). You have to scroll over the film title and the synopsis will appear. You can change city and venue at the top.

Tickets are $15/each and go on sale THIS SATURDAY at 8am. If you want strictly tickets for the Ogden venue you can purchase them at the Egyptian Theater. If you want to buy tickets for various venues you'll have to go to Trolley Square in SLC. I'm working there this weekend, so let me know if you're coming up and we can go to the most amazing place to get Belgian waffles and french fries. Yes, you eat them together and it's amazing.

The festival runs January 21st-31st. There are a few birthdays during those dates, so I feel like something big could happen...

It's time for the annual end-of-term/christmas breakfast and talent show. The goal this year is to not have way too much food so everyone's in charge of bringing one thing. I'll provide hash browns. It doesn't have to be cooked on arrival, we can cook everything on site. I suggest that everyone comment on what they are going to bring so that we don't have two people bringing orange juice and chocolate milk, for example. And if somebody will please bring bacon I would appreciate it. I love bacon.

I did something crazy today. I bought a Kelsey Excelsior 6x10 tabletop platen press. It is for letterpress, a process I have fallen in love with. It will take me some time to restore it (needs one new roller and at least a paint job), clean the 15 different kinds type - Garamond, Century, and Bodini to name a few, and get rid of the cigarette smoke smell it came with (I did just pick it up from a trailer park). But it's amazing and I have high hopes it will take me far!

So here's where you guys care - would any of you be interested in having a workshop? It wouldn't be for a few months...or more. But it would be just a sweet taste into the world of letterpress and an excuse to all get together again. Oh and Adrienne, even though you have exposure to letterpress already, I will buy you a meal from Hires. C'mon. I miss everyone...

Last night I rode my bike down to a local music shop and saw they had art on their walls. I asked the guy how hard it would be to get a show there and he said not hard. He said the shows are usually up for a month or two and the next one has fallen through. I told him about our family show and he seemed interested. He said to email him some samples and he'll decide if it characterizes the sort of themes he wants in his shop. So. I propose that each of you email me a few pictures of a few things that really characterize your style and I'll pass them on to him. Savvy? Good.

Alright, alright. So the Spring Salon is currently on display at Springville Art Museum. And let me tell you, it kicks ass. Darci and I go to see it about every other day, it's that good. This little beauty is currently in the show. Like it? The artist is pretty good at stuff. But I might be a little biased. Name: Brooke Elaine Smart Sadler.

This painting is not in the show, nor has it been in the show. But the artist IS in the show and I like just about everything he does. Name: Brian Kershiznik.
A painting quite similar to this one is in the show. If I wanted to be a painter, I would want to be her. She's just so brilliant because she teeters on the edge of "cartoony" but she pulls it off and people still see her as a fine artist. Name: Melissa Peck.

Dear family,

There has been some talk among some of us about doing a family show and I wondered what everyone thought about it. Two things that seem important to me are: 1. That we only include work that has been done outside of school, thus provoking us to do work outside of school. Plus it would be cool to see a show of all new work. 2. Wherever we find a gallery to show, that it be outside of Logan. It's nice to have a bunch of lines on your resume but it kind of sucks when they are all in the valley.

If this is something that we are all interested in doing I think we should set a date so that we have something specific to work towards.

I think my life just took such a dramatic turn a month ago that I almost lost myself. Don't worry, I refunded my ticket to Atlanta, GA to see that freckled face wannabe brunette and I stopped having a little thing for that cute redheaded guy, after I saw these. I'm back to my old self.

A picture can say a thousand words. For those of you who didn't come, what's running through your mind right now?

Well, here's my perspective of the night: As we got on the bus, we got hit with a heat wave. The AC is broken and the windows do not open. Even though Matt sits down first, no one sits by him. Not even his wife. Ashlee and Katie sit in the very last row near the bathroom. We cannot describe the excitement for a 2 hour bus ride at this moment.

Caroline, and I may be wrong, is our 70+ hostess for the next 2 hours on this bus with thick smoke air stuck in our lungs. She passes out scratch cards and Liza, Jackson's wife wins a dollar off her next trip. I win a free gift. What's my free gift you ask? After 10 minutes of anticipating my free gift I get handed a little white box and Caroline says, "I think it's dice." It is dice. I try to give them to Adrienne as a birthday gift and she asks me to hold onto them for her. Suddenly I notice a couple of guys already pouring liquor into their coke - you get free coke on the fun bus in case you didn't know. The one on the right keeps making eye contact with me. This shouldn't happen because I am behind him and seats are facing forward people. He takes this opportunity to ask me about my free gift. Caroline comes by and asks for birthdays. We cheer for Adrienne and Caroline gets the bus singing. The eye contact guy's friend who is the most intoxicated, pressures Adrienne to take a shot. I think she's flattered and flabbergasted and politely says, "No." Somewhere in the mix of this I am called Mongolian, but what else is new?

Now, let me set up the visual imagery of our next friend. African American, 2 tear drop tattoos under one eye, wife beater (the tank top not an assumption), baggy pants so baggy you could see leg skin between his pants and boxers - Whit has proof. And I can never forget, the gold tooth. He went to the bathroom at least 5 times. Once while in there, we try to talk Brandt into holding the door shut so he can't get out. But I have a better plan. I ask Brandt to take his shirt off and stand in the aisle with his hands on his hips. Sadly, It doesn't happen. But Whit's sister Bree has to use the bathroom and Brandt takes the opportunity to make our wishes come true, hence the first photo. Caroline also takes this opportunity to announce over the intercom that there's a man without his shirt in the back and of course, everyone looks.

Gold tooth guy tells intoxicated guy about his daddy's girlfriend being a stripper and gold tooth guy's girlfriend mentions how the stripper girlfriend is her age (she's around our age...no more than Brandt's age). All the while Ashlee and Katie were experiencing bathroom whiffs and twice the heat as their clothes were sticking to their skin due to the broken furness directly behind them. We are pulling into Wendover when Adrienne points out the 2 available seats in front of Whit and Bree which is behind mine and Adrienne's friends - eye contact guy and intoxicated guy. Ashlee and Katie we're pretty pissed that no one had noticed these seats, but they can only blame themselves.

There are 3 stops in Wendover and we wanted the last one. So did gold tooth guy until we're at the first stop and he looks out the window, "Is that my daddy? I think that's my daddy! But all Africans look alike. I think that's my daddy...." he then pushes past those slowly shuffling out of the bus and run across the parking lot to a car. Him and his girlfriend get in. We see them at the Rainbow Casino, our stop, with a guy who looks their age. We don't see them ever again.

I think half of us got sick from the buffet and for some reason only a few people managed to find strawberries. A fruit that everyone seemed to want. Jackson put a lobster claw in replacement of his real hand and my theory for him not winning while gambling is because he didn't use his lobster claw hand after the buffet. Katie gets a fortune cookie that says she will experience a series of luck tomorrow. So she waits until midnight to make any bets. Bree and Whit teach us how to play Roulette and Adrienne has a pretty high stack of 50 cent chips but loses her $10 investment. As do I (but much quicker and less exciting than everyone else). Ashlee sits at a slot machine and is immediately greeted by a man who wants to show her his watch. Everyone gets involved in blackjack as Katie and I chit chat until midnight. We make observations of a particular slot machine that we've seen 2 people get winnings from. We decide that's the first game Katie will play. Meanwhile, everyone playing on a table gets a yellow ticket at a chance for $1,000. Whit's ticket number gets called and she wins $100 and the chance. It's finally midnight and Katie puts her dollar in where a credit is worth 5 cents. Instant loser. For fun I put a dollar in the same slot machine. Right when I get low on credits, I rack them up somehow. I am forced to cash in my winnings of 25 cents to watch Whit battle it out for a grand by trying to get a slot machine roll more than 1600 times in 3 minutes. She didn't win. Back to my slot machine. I put my winnings back in and I'm not having the same luck. I have 2 credits left then slowly I see bobbers lining up. I scream and Matt makes fun of me but I don't care because I gain 100 credits - that's 5 whole dollars! I cash it in. Mostly everyone is still blackjackin it up, except Jackson who is still on that stupid computer automated poker game all alone. There's only an hour left and Adrienne lost another $5 to blackjack. I heard at one point she had won a lot but couldn't stop herself. She convinces me to invest my slot machine earnings into blackjack. I am very hesitant, but once I agree she starts going off, "Should I do it to? Yeah, just another 5 bucks no big deal, right? Yeah, yeah." I sit her down and give her a lesson about being addicted to gambling and put a chair in between her and the tables. She thanks me. I made a pact with myself if I make more than $5, I will put it to the side and not tamper with it. I earn more then I get back to where I started. Then blackjack! I put my extra $1.50 in with my slot machine savings to not use. I don't want to lose my new money so I take off. A guy approaches a few of us at a table and tells us to join him in his suite where there's a hot tub and a steam room. We pretend to be bummed that we have to take the fun bus in 20 minutes and he keeps trying to convince us, but mainly Jackson. He points to him a lot and tells us how much Jackson wants to use the steam room. I flat out tell him it's not going to happen and he hugs me and rubs Jackson's chest, squeezes his shoulder and leaves. I go back to blackjack and lose my newly winnings and Brandt watches me dip in my savings. I give him the "don't judge me look." I win and doubled my $3 bet (and quickly put it back into savings). I tell everyone I'm done as I slide the new $3 into the circle. Blackjack! I got lucky. It's time to go and I turned my $5 slot machine winnings into $14. So with the cost of the bus ticket and all the gambling, I earned back $2 off my ticket which is a much better way to say I spent $11.

Overall a pretty damn good night. Hope it was all Adrienne ever dreamed about!

Due to my project this week, (we are doing a huge print out and putting it up on campus, whilst trying to keep it cheap) I came across this man. I think he may be a genius. really. He blows up the images huge, then puts them up illegally, all over towns. I had to share this with all of our family. P.s. there are birthdays coming up soon. (Tony and Mackay) So thus....there should be a reuniting birthday parties!!!!!!

This is set up in the Printmaking studio, by all the drawers. Tell everyone about it and bring all your change! Arseneth has already donated a whole dollar bill. If you have jars, lets make more and put them all over the art building. We have permission to put one in the art office. I say we put one there, the other printmaking room and the painting studios. Do you think Aggie Ice Cream would let us put one there too? If you make one, you could even go as far as choosing your favorite Brandt photo from facebook and writing your own pity note. I say we do this for one month exactly. I will try to collect all the change every other day (so no one will steal it), and then take it to coinstar! Maybe this will help Brandt relax and pass that stone so he doesn't have to get it surgically removed!

So I am thinking about this project that I am going to do, I need some more brains and ideas. Could you guys help me...so I general gist of my idea, I want to do a series of portraits with the theme of fear. But not regular fears like spiders, but like ironic funny ones. Examples: Dentist office, Woman weighing herself, heights, operating table, or maybe seeing David Bowie naked in a diaper. I mean really, I love the David Bowie as much as any other Labyrinth obsessor.....But nobody wants to see Jareth the Goblin King in a diaper. Anywhoo, if anyone has any good ideas on ironic fears let me know. Thanks family!
